What are some things you need before Landscaping your yard?

Lawn

If you're a do-it-yourselfer and enjoy taking care of your yard, garden, and driveway, one of the first questions you may have is, "How to do landscaping on your own?" While some people can handle doing a variety of yard and garden chores like mowing, pulling weeds, planting flowers and ferns, others simply lack the time or expertise to accomplish these tasks. Fortunately, with a little research, you'll be able to find plenty of resources for learning how to do landscaping on your own. If you know the basics of plant cultivation and how to spade and rake in the garden, you may not need any more help. However, if you're interested in improving your landscaping appearance but don't have the time or skills needed to employ a professional landscaper, here are some great tips that can help you learn how to do landscaping on your own.

First, you'll want to gather a few landscaping tools. This might include lawn mowers (which you should already have, if you haven't already), rakes, spades, water hoses and hand pumps. You'll also want to make sure that you have a good supply of soil, fertilizer (potting mix), plants (even flowering plants like plants that grow quickly and those that don't need much maintenance), edibles, litter, mulch, and other yard materials. If you plan on doing any digging, however, you should have the appropriate tools for this, as well as a shovel.

Next, you'll want to start planning. This means drawing out your layout on graph paper, which will serve as your guide throughout the process. Note the size of your yard, how much sunlight it gets and any fence or walls you have that will need to be included. Next, think about any features you'd like to include like decks, patios, outdoor hot tubs, etc. You can also decide what plants you'll want to grow, whether you'd prefer shade or sun, and where in your yard you want them to grow. By thinking through these details, you'll be able to know what to plant and where.

Next, you'll want to make a list of all the equipment you'll need to get your yard done. You'll want to get a power tiller, a cultivator, and a weed whacker. You should also make a list of your supplies so you don't have to go rummaging around through the garage or around your house. Tools like a weed whacker, a shovel and rake, a garden hose and sprinkler head will all be required. If you live in an area with a severe weather pattern, make sure you have these items in advance.

When it comes time to planting, you'll want to plan ahead. You'll want to plant things that will be able to handle colder weather. For example, if you have trees that are going to be exposed to colder temperatures, you'll want to plant those types of trees.

Your final consideration is preparation. You'll want to make sure that your lawn has all of the proper nutrients needed for thriving. This means making sure that you water your lawn regularly and adding fertilizers as needed. It's important to be as proactive as possible when you're thinking about doing any kind of landscaping.
