- Cutter/wire stripper;
- Use a shovel to trench
- Underground feeder cable
Plan Outdoor Garden Lighting
This entire project will take you about a day. Don't be discouraged. You should first mark the exact location of each lighting fixture in your outdoor space. Spray paint can be used to mark the positions.
Next dig a trench between each point. This is where the wire will be buried once you have installed the lighting posts. The wire must be connected to an existing electrical supply. This outlet should be GFCI protected. You must also ensure that the outlet does not overload the circuit that you are tying into and that the box is large enough to accommodate the additional wire.
Outdoor lighting installations are considered notifiable electrical works under Part P of the Building Regulations. Please contact your local council before you proceed.
How to Install Landscape Path Lighting
You will need to have some electrical knowledge in order to install your outdoor lighting. We recommend that non-professionals attempt these tasks on their own. If you are confident with your electrical skills, then this is the way to go.
- Assemble lighting fixtures. You are now ready to go. Follow the instructions to assemble your landscape lighting kit. Check that all the light bulbs are working before you add them. Replace any defective ones.
- Fixtures should be placed at their appropriate locations. Place the lighting units in the designated spots according to your planning. It's possible to move the lighting units later so it's best to not drive the stakes into the ground.
- Connect the fixture wires to a power supply. To connect each landscape lighting fixture with the cable, use either direct burial connectors (or hubs). To make troubleshooting easier, you can use a hub system that centralizes cable splices for each fixture area.
- Verify that all lights are on. To ensure that all lighting units fall within the 9-15v range, use a voltmeter. The voltage range for halogen lamps is between 10v and 12v. You can connect a home run to a voltage tap with a lower voltage tap if you find voltages that are below the minimum voltage. This will ensure the voltage is within the acceptable range.
- Bury wires. After you have checked that everything is working correctly, you can now take care of the trenches dug between the lighting fixtures.
- Night evaluation. While you can work during the day, you won't know if it will be finished until night falls. Most lighting fixtures can be adjusted to allow you to aim the light precisely at the area you desire for maximum aesthetics.
